| The
Ballena Coast is
a three-and-one-half hour drive from the capital of San Jose
via the PanAmerican Highway which takes you through some of the
highest mountains in the country and past views of Mt. Chiripo,
the highest point in Costa Rica. The route through the mountains
takes you from San Jose to Cartago, then through San Isidro del
General, a peaceful community offering most any goods or services
needed. San Isidro is the main service center for this region
of the country. From San Isidro, you will leave the PanAmerican
Highway and drop to the coast at Dominical by paved road, then
south down the coast on a new paved road to Ballena. |
| Alternate
routes from San Jose by going directly west to the coast then
down to the south coast, are a little longer in drive time but
offer different scenery and character of the countryside. These
routes include paved and gravel road sections. |
